Roberto Begnini’s character in Down by Law, a drifter from Italy with a limited grasp of English, repeats his favorite English-language phrase throughout the movie: “It is a sad and beautiful world.” When I get it right, that’s what I want my work to express.
I’m a visitor with a camera, taking in the landscape before it fades away. I’m looking for the lonely corners of our sad and beautiful world where a little history is poking through into the present or some human-made object is clinging onto the natural environment.
I was born and raised in New York City. I’ve settled in Brooklyn now, after also living in Ohio, Massachusetts, California and Wisconsin.
In my day job I work for labor unions and progressive political organizations, doing my part to make our society more decent and just. I’m pretty proud of the fact that I’ve visited 49 of the United States.
